Intelligent Transportation systems

As defined by the EU Directive 2010/40/EU of 7 July 2010“advanced applications, which without embodying intelligence as such aim to provide innovative services relating to different modes of transport and traffic management and enable various users to be better informed and make safer, more coordinated and ‘smarter’ use of transport networks”.

This leads to the integration of information and communication technologies (ICT) in cities and transport infrastructures in order to make them intelligent. The introduction of various physical devices connected to the network will therefore lead to an optimisation of operations and services for users.

However, this innovation makes the city vulnerable from the point of view of security and privacy of citizens. Therefore, a smart city will have to be prepared to meet the challenges in these fields.

Our research deals with implementing a flexible, secure and privacy-preserving solution to prevent, mitigate and respond to possible threats that could affect an Intelligent Transportation System. The identified solutions will be evaluated with respect to their impact on all functional aspects of the automotive sector, such as security, performance, usability by users and so on. In particular, the main objectives of the research are to guarantee the security of vehicles as the main component of an ITS (Automotive Cybersecurity) and to provide an architecture that guarantees the security of intelligent transport systems and the privacy of circulating information considering all the subsystems that compose different layers of ITS, such as cloud and edge nodes, and their communications (Privacy-aware Solutions).
